We are Innovations in Global Surgery (IGS), a multidisciplinary international collaborative dedicated to global surgery and innovation. This multinational team is made up of people of all age groups, including students, junior and senior professionals from the medical, public health, and engineering fields, senior personnel from the industry sector, and investors working to improve surgical care in resource-limited areas around the world.
Despite the substantial evidence highlighting the cost-effectiveness of surgical care in LMICs (Low-Middle Income Countries), there is a noticeable knowledge gap with respect to the burden and distribution of these surgical conditions and how they affect the overall "unmet need" of these regions. According to the present literature, with the exception of obstetric care, the unmet need in surgical specialties is poorly defined and research related to it is minimal.
We are conducting this cross-sectional survey to determine the perceived unmet needs of surgical care providers, especially those working in remote and rural areas, delivering essential surgical care.
Irrespective of your country of primary practice, if you have provided surgical care in low-resource settings of LMICs, we request that you complete this 8 - minute survey to help us understand more about your unmet surgical needs.
The Disease Control Priorities 3 literature identifies 44 surgical procedures as essential, on the basis that they address substantial needs and cost-effectiveness, so they can be feasibly implemented.
These 44 procedures are:
Dental Procedures Extraction Abscess drainage Dental caries Obstetrics and Gynaecology Normal vaginal delivery Cesarean Section Ectopic Pregnancy Vacuum/Instrument assisted delivery Dilatation and curettage Tubal Ligation Vasectomy Hysterectomy Obstetric fistula repair Cryotherapy for pre-cancerous lesions
Congenital / Pediatric Cleft lip and Cleft palate Club foot repair Hydrocephalus shunt placement Anorectal malformation Ophthalmology Cataract extraction and glaucoma management Trachoma eyelid surgery | General Surgery Drainage of a superficial abscess Male Circumcision Perforated GI tract repair Appendectomy Cholecystectomy Bowel Obstruction Colostomy and Colon re-anastomosis Hydrocelectomy Hernia repair (including incarceration) Catheterisation/Supra-pubic Cystostomy Trauma and Orthopedics Basic life support Laceration Suturing Tube thoracostomy Trauma Laparotomy Fasciotomy/ Escharotomy Closed reduction of fractures External fixator/traction placement Open fracture management (conservative) Operative fracture management in OT Amputation Burr holes Skin grafting Septic Arthritis Drainage Osteomyelitis debridement Advanced Life support with surgical airway |
The data collected from this questionnaire will be used to determine the unmet needs based on the details of the facility, basic provisions (eg water, electricity etc), laboratory facilities, radiological facilities, sterilization and infection control, inter-hospital referral system and communication with other hospitals, inter-speciality consultation, data management, maintenance of surgical equipment, blood product management, biomedical waste management, equipment and other supplies procurement, information about recent advances/innovations, training of medical and non-medical staff, pre-operative and post-operative care, post-discharge care and rehabilitation.
The survey is being distributed using the snowball method. We would appreciate it if you could forward the link to any colleagues and surgical care providers in your network who work with surgical patients.
All personal and/or identifying information will be kept strictly confidential under any circumstance.
